Happy Disability?

So many have asked about this new chapter in our lives, so thought it was time to start up the blog or at least start a new one. That fabulously handsome man is Dan Van Alstine, the one lurking over his shoulder is his wife and best friend, Debbie. You can catch up on our adventures from the past few years on our other blogs at www.dananddeb.blogspot.com, or click on the link on the right "Eagle's Wings and Other Things."

Dan's liver transplant in August 2008 saved his life, however, the many meds he must take the rest of his life and many complications from the Alpha-1 and Cirrhosis prior to transplant have made him quite sick.  The list of "broken parts" as Dan calls it is endless: heart damage (pacemaker working at 100%), spleen damage (removed), kidney damage, and neurological issues - chronic and constant pain in feet, legs, head; and the worst for someone like who loves to read: central fusion disruption - this is damage in the brain causing the eyes to work separately, resulting in double vision.  Since reading is critical to his ministry, and after consulting his team of doctors, all decided it was time to stop working and go on full-time disability.  So that chapter of our lives began April 1st, 2011.

So we try to keep soaring with eagle's wings as we watch to see where God will lead next.  We are staying in Hawaii, that's where Dan's doctor team and medical insurance is - I'm sure if we tried to apply for new medical insurance somewhere else, they would laugh hysterically.

Wishing you joy in the midst of your uncertainty,

Debbie Van Alstine

  1. We are so grateful for the many years of service and know it will continue for the both of you in a different capacity. Everyone knows Dan can't sit still...lol. We love you and will pray daily for God's direction and will. I am reminded of what Jeremiah 29:11 says. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. This is a great way to keep up with whats happening. Thanks for sharing your hearts and lives with us.
